Our inclusion experiences
More than 300 people, including key actors in DRR, disability and older adults from these four countries, together with members of organizations from these two groups attended the presentation of systematization of project experiences.
With the publication of the systematization of pilot projects and significant experiences of the project "Inclusion of People with Disabilities and Older Adults in Disaster Risk Reduction in Central America" (2016-2019) and its presentation to key actors, the activities of this regional project developed in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, implemented by ASB, FECONORI, CORDES and their partners in the four countries, and financed by the Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, are coming to an end.
More than 300 people, including key actors in DRR, disability and older people from these four countries, together with members of organisations from these two groups attended the presentation of the systematisation of project experiences in the days leading up to the International Day for DRR (13 October).
Some of the experiences at local, national and regional level can be mentioned here:
- Inclusive temporary shelters.
- Day homes for older adults as a space for inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction.
- Inclusive warning system in universities.
- Commitment of governing bodies for risk management and disability.
- Inclusive theatre play "Radio Tormenta".
- Inclusive Central American Policy for Integral Risk Management (PCGIR).
The protagonists themselves (representatives of governing bodies, municipalities, universities, partner organizations, etc.) presented to those present what was narrated in the systematization.
The experiences of this systematization show that it is possible to promote the inclusion of these groups in disaster risk management. They also show that, with willingness, sometimes simple and low cost actions can facilitate that people with disabilities and older adults are increasingly involved in the different risk management processes developed in their countries and that risk management actors can continue to learn more about inclusion, to put it into practice. The selection of experiences was carried out with the criterion, among others, that they were replicable. We hope that these experiences can be replicated in the future and that they can give light to continue advancing towards a more inclusive risk management, according to the orientations in this respect of the Sendai Framework and the Central American Policy on Integrated Risk Management (PCGIR).
